Biophysical Society Statement on the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018 March 27, 2018 – The Biophysical Society thanks Congress for the robust support for science research in the FY 2018 Omnibus bill approved on March 23 that resulted in funding increases for science across the government, including $37.3 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), $7.77 billion for the National Science Foundation, and $6.26 billion for the Department of Energy Office of Science. By providing meaningful growth to these agencies, Congress has helped ensure that research can continue to improve our nation’s health and enhance the United States’ competitiveness in today’s global information and innovation-based economy. The Society especially would like to thank the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chairs Roy Blunt and Tom Cole and Ranking Members Patty Murray and Rosa DeLauro, along with the full Appropriations Committee leadership, for championing a reliable, robust budget trajectory for the NIH in recent years to accelerate the promise of treatments for patients and to ensure stability in the nation’s research capacity over the long term.
