2024 Theory & Computation Subgroup

The purpose of the Theory and Computation Subgroup is to better highlight and network biophysicists who are interested in theoretical and computational aspects of biophysical systems, to provide a scientific forum for mini-symposia before Biophysical Society (BPS) meetings, to elevate the visibility and importance of theory and simulation within BPS overall, and to attract new members to BPS in this area.

The role of theory and computation in biophysical research has grown enormously over the past 50 years. Much of this growth has occurred in the area of all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Likewise, the role of physics-based analytical theory continues to be central to our understanding of biophysical systems. In recent years there has been dramatic growth in related and new computational areas, such as free energy sampling, coarse-graining, QM/MM, ligand docking, multiscale modeling, knowledge and data driven computational biology, and most recently in the explosive growth of machine learning methods that may well fundamentally influence significant segments of biophysical science. Indeed, we have reached a point in time where the strongest papers and grant proposals have both experimental and theoretical/computational elements to them.

We welcome all theoretical and computational approaches for the study of biophysical systems, including (but not limited to) analytical theory and those computational methods mentioned above – all with a strong connection to experimental biophysical research to the extent possible. The Theory & Computation Subgroup also offers the Early Career Award and the Mid-Career Award annually, for excellence in the field at these different career stages.

Recruiter Registration for Education & Career Opportunities Fair at BPS2025

This fair will provide a venue for representatives from educational institutions, industry companies, and government agencies to meet with attendees and share information about their opportunities. Representatives from colleges and universities with leading programs in biophysics will meet potential students and postdoctoral candidates. Representatives from institutions, companies, and agencies can connect with attendees to provide information about employment and funding opportunities. To participate as a representative, you must be registered in advance.

Rules & Regulations for the Education and Career Fair

Participating institutions may use the space on the table to display information about their institutions/programs. Tables will be skirted, and a name card provided, but you are encouraged to bring materials to decorate the tabletop such as a branded table skirt/tablecloth, as well as information to distribute such as pamphlets, giveaways, etc.

Please Note:
 

  • • Institutions are limited to the 6’ by 30” tabletop space and are prohibited from bringing upright pop-up signage, banners, and/or posters.
  • • Institutions may not obstruct exhibiting company booths’ line of sight at any time during the duration of the Education and Career Fair.
  • • Institutions are not permitted to use the space behind their table, block any aisles between tables, obstruct exhibitor booths, or use the space in front of their table for any reason.
  • • Tables with no exhibiting companies behind them must also comply with this rule.

 

Participating institutions that do not comply with these rules will be asked to remove items that violate this policy. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Caitlin Simpson at [email protected].
