BPS Announces 2018 Election Results for President-elect, Secretary, and Council

The Biophysical Society (BPS) announced Catherine Royer, Chaired Constellation Professor in Biocomputation and Bioinformatics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been elected President-elect. She will assume the office of President-elect at the Society’s 2019 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, and begin her term as President at the 2020 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.

“I am truly honored to have been elected President-elect of the Biophysical Society, a society that has been so important to me personally, and to many others as we have pursued our careers in this exciting field,” said Royer. “Today is a very exciting time for biophysics. Our ability to probe the physical mechanisms of life is advancing at an incredible pace. More challenging will be to integrate our findings and communicate our understanding to the benefit of all. I believe a strong Biophysical Society will be essential to meet these challenges. BPS has a strong program in citizen outreach, and I pledge to support these ongoing efforts to promote the importance of science for our society.”

Royer earned her doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a licence in biochemistry from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and a general academic studies degree in natural sciences from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie. She has been a BPS member since 1987.

Erin Sheets, Associate Professor, College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota, Duluth, was elected Secretary. She earned her doctorate in chemistry from the University of North Carolina and her undergraduate degree from Juniata College. Sheets has been a BPS member since 1993. She will serve a four-year term beginning July 1, 2019.

Four BPS members were also elected to serve on Council, the Society’s governing body.  They are:

  1. Michelle Digman, University of California, Irvine;
  2. Marta Filizola, Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai;
  3. Joseph Mindell, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), NIH; and
  4. Anna Moroni, University of Milan, Italy.

Each will serve a three-year term, beginning on March 5, 2019.
