Johns Hopkins Students, Biophysical Society Host Science Poster Night at Baltimore City Hall

BALTIMORE, MD – On March 28, 2019, the Johns Hopkins Science Policy Group (JHSPG) and the Biophysical Society (BPS) hosted a science poster night for Baltimore policymakers in the Curran Room in Baltimore City Hall. Graduate students presented their research findings on opioid-related deaths in Maryland, STEM education, pancreatic cancer and other locally impactful topics. Thirteen research projects were presented in total. The night was designed to highlight important research efforts underway in Baltimore and share the importance of science-based policymaking with city officials.

“The event was extremely successful, filled with so much meaningful exchange,” said Sophie Rottenberg, Coordinator, JHSPG. “The presenters brought so much enthusiasm and expertise to the table and city officials really were willing to listen and think critically about research implications for Baltimore city.”

The event coincided with the annual Biophysics Week, a messaging week that calls attention to the field of biophysics. The global event brings together biophysicists to share their research, highlight pressing science policy issues, and connect with other scientists.

“It was a pleasure to partner with the Johns Hopkins Science Policy Group to host this important event,” said Jennifer Pesanelli, Executive Officer, BPS. “The Baltimore region is a research hub and was home to our 2019 Annual Meeting, which brought over 5,000 scientists to the city in early March. It is critical that policymakers at all levels of government value the input of the scientific community in policymaking.”
