The Biophysicist Names Padmini Rangamani as New Editor-in-Chief

ROCKVILLE, MD – The Biophysical Society is pleased to announce that Padmini Rangamani of the University of California, San Diego has been named as the new Editor-in-Chief of the The Biophysicsist, the Society’s open access education journal. The journal was developed under the leadership and vision of founding and  current Editor-in-Chief, Sam Safran of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, to highlight and nurture biophysics education and its scholarship and development.

“Now, more than ever, is the time for an education journal such as The Biophysicist to steer the conversation towards what matters most, creating a forum for best practices in education at all levels, and separating the information from the noise,” said Padmini Rangamani. “I look forward to building upon all that Sam has put in place and continue to grow and evolve the journal during my tenure.”

Rangmani credits her own interdisciplinary training journey as well as serendipity for bringing her into the world of biophysics after seeking a a place where she could apply mathematical principles to biology.Rangmani’s goals for her tenure as Editor-in-Chief include the exploration of the complementary roles of formal education alongside educational journals in advancing research, the highlighting of research and analysis into best pedagogical practices for graduate programs, the development and design of research projects for high school interns and undergraduates, the creation of primers on educational and scientific methods, an opportunity to study the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives on the biophysical community, and to share interviews and invited opinion pieces with the larger scientific community.

The Biophysicist is an online open access journal launched in 2018 for biophysics educators and scholars working at all levels of the education system from K-12 through post-graduate research. The Journal serves a worldwide, broad audience to make fundamental concepts and techniques in biophysics and related disciplines, as well as evidence-based pedagogical practice, accessible through academic articles and informal reports that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of biophysics education and the activities of biophysicists in a variety of scientific fields.
