Many of us postdocs are out there looking for our next position. Many of us hope that position is as an independent investigator/professor, where we can finally follow up on all those ideas we've got in our heads. If you are one of those postdocs thinking of the next step, another meeting, taking place soon after the Biophysical Society 2012 Annual Meeting, might be of interest to you. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is sponsoring the 2012 Workshop for Postdocs Transitioning to Independent Positions to help postdocs do just that. The workshop will focus mainly on academic positions, but other scientific careers will also be covered. This two-day workshop will be held on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland, on March 12–13,2012. The first day will cover how to find that independent position. How to succeed in that position will be covered on the second day.  Professors and professionals from different universities and industry will be presenting, making the lineup quite diverse. While the workshop announcement says that emphasis will be placed on young investigators who are underrepresented in biomedical or behavioral sciences, it also states that anyone "interested in issues of inclusion and creating a more diverse scientific workforce are encouraged to apply." All applications must be received no later than November 30. To apply, you must be a US citizen or permanent resident. There is also an application fee, but travel awards are available.
