For many of us, conferences involve travel to a city far from home. Exciting, but intimidating. As a grad student in SoCal, I made a list of San Diego highlights that myself and my local friends suggest you consider while you are here for the BPS2023 National Meeting.
1. Eat!
Well, that wasn’t exactly revolutionary, but Southern California has an incredibly diverse food scene that fits even a graduate student budget. The BPS annual meeting is nearly a full week. I am certain everyone will need to eat. I have a few places to highlight here recommended by locals.
Lucha Libre Tacos ($)
I might hate the stereotype, but it is true that it’s not a trip to SoCal without tacos (or maybe a California-style burrito if fries are your thing). One of my lab mates immediately pointed me here when I solicited places to eat in San Diego.
Bahn Thai ($)
I found this place on a whim after driving down to San Diego over the past winter holiday. Best Crab Fried Rice I have ever had, and the Green Papaya salad was also delicious. In the University Hills neighborhood, it is also farther away from the chaos of a downtown. The neighborhood has a great “small town” feel, so maybe take a walk if you decide to go. It’s a good time to remind those who have not been down to SoCal before remember spice levels are higher. Order less than you might normally order. You can always add spice.
Little Italy Neighborhood ($$)
A little more expensive, but if you are looking for a nice dinner. I recommend looking at the Little Italy neighborhood in San Diego.
Honorable mention: In N Out ($)
2. Get Outside!!
If you have a day where you need to get away from the main event, there’s lots of fabulous hiking in the area. The Cabrillo National Monument has coast, cliffs, and wildflowers. The picture is from my own hikes a little farther north but still in SoCal at the Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in Orange County.
3. SoCal Sunsets!!!
Lastly, I cannot emphasize enough that downtown San Diego is right on the coast. Go over to the bay walk right in downtown and catch at least one sunset while you are here (about 5:30 pm this time of year). I promise it is worth your while.
